| Children, teachers, caregivers, families and the community will celebrate young children throughout April during Rochester’s Month of the Young Child. This year’s theme is Move To Learn…Learn To Move. Various venues in Rochester and surrounding areas will feature concerts and activities. Download the calendar (PDF) for detailed information.
The importance of movement in learning was chosen as a result of several factors. Recent research by the Rochester City School District has shown that motor skills are at least as important as any other factor to a child’s success in school. In addition, a growing body of information also illustrates that children are increasingly becoming overweight, and lack daily exercise. And importantly, movement has been shown to help children learn. Research on learning demonstrates that only 5-10% of what we listen to and see is retained. But when actively engaged, that percentage increases up to 75%-90%.
The celebrations and activities of the Month of the Young Child are designed to build broader support for early childhood programs that nurture young children’s early learning and growth, as well as model for teachers, caregivers, and parents activities to promote learning through movement.
The Month of the Young Child is a chance to celebrate the learning opportunities of young children, and to recognize the responsibilities we share for helping them make the most of the early years. Take advantage of the many activities planned for April and invite families you know to come on and move, sing, dance, play and read together. |
